For the past several years, coconut oil has been the darling of weight loss gurus and health-related publications. New research, however, has put the brakes on the hype.
A January 2020 publication in the journal Circulation revealed that ingesting coconut oil can actually have a negative effect on our health. The study, involving 17 different trials and over 700 people, found that using coconut oil actual increased LDL and cholesterol levels by 9%. Not only was the increase risk for heart disease raised, but there were no benefits for fat loss, decreased inflammation or benefits in controlling blood sugar.
It appears that the miracle of coconut oil may have been a marketing ruse. I know, I bought the books too, but don’t feel like you were duped. There are still supposed experts who swear that complex carbs cause weight loss because of the energy used to break them down, when in fact, all carbohydrates are still just sugar!
